Turn off your emotions

It would be so good if we could sometimes turn off our feelings, right?

Sometimes it would be nice to be able to turn our feelings on and off, unfortunately, this is neither possible nor necessary. Emotions are valid, and here for a reason.

Emotions play a significant role in our everyday lives. They influence our behaviors, thoughts, and decision-making processes. Emotions can be positive or negative and can be expressed in different ways. In this article, we will explore the use of our emotions and how they affect our lives.

Evolution of emotions

If we observe feelings from an evolutionary psychological point of view emotions are adaptive factors in our lives because they communicate to us:
if we are afraid of something, the adaptive behavior is to run away from the situation.
Although in our modern world, we don’t have to face tigers and run for our lives like in prehistoric times, however, these fight-flight-freeze responses still work in our bodies today.

Feelings are signaling systems

Emotions are complex psychological experiences that are a fundamental part of the human experience. We often think of them as irrational or purely subjective experiences. But in reality, feelings serve a critical signaling function that helps us navigate the world around us.

Emotions are signaling to others

If we view our feelings as valid signaling systems, then we can also pay attention to them. We may recognize what situations evoke our negative and positive feelings. At their core, emotions are signals that help us communicate our internal states to others. When we experience feelings, we are essentially signaling to others how we feel and what our needs are in a given situation. For example, if we are feeling angry, we may be signaling to others that we feel threatened or that our boundaries have been violated.

Feelings are signaling to ourselves

Feelings are also a form of self-signaling, helping us to understand our own internal states and needs. When we experience emotions, we are often better able to identify what is causing those feelings. If we are feeling anxious, we may be signaling to ourselves that we need to take steps to reduce stress or avoid a certain situation. Self-knowledge in terms of emotion regulation is so important. If we are aware of our feelings and what causes them, then we may choose adaptive emotion regulation strategies.
